Please Don't Label My Child: Break the Doctor-Diagnosis-Drug Cycle
New -
In Hardcover! Written By Scott M. Shannon, MD
We
love to label things. We also love to define ourselves and others in the realm of our
peers: She's an "A" student; he's a star athlete; she's a nerd; he's a troublemaker.
No where does this come into play more, than with our young people. As we grow older, we
understand that who we were in are youth was part of our growth. And as we age,
we understand that we transcend the
labels, although we never quite forget them.
Sadly, in this young
generation, labels are not limited to athletics and academics.
As the
increasing amount of children are being labeled "ADD" or "ADHD" and worse,
young people these days are forced to carry the burdens of what they perceive as
"inferior bodies" and "inferior minds," save the dangerous medications thrown
in after
the diagnosis. All this in hopes of making right the
perceived medical problem.
Author and
pediatric psychiatrist, Scott M. Shannon, M.D., has seen enough damaging
"labeling," and has chosen to do something about it. He's written a
book that shares his ideas for creating childhood wellness, although they
are not often shared by the popular "medical" view. In fact, he goes out on
a limb to note, in his experience, environment and nutrition are often at
root cause of a misbehaving child. In his book, he is clearly
passionate about doing more for our children from a natural standpoint.

Food Rules for Healthy Backs
By Dr. Todd Sinett, DC, and Sheldon Sinett, DC
One
Saturday afternoon I received a phone call from a Grammy-winning
recording artist who was suffering from severe upper back and neck
pain and was concerned that she was not going to be able to make it
through her performance on Saturday Night Live and a concert
that was scheduled for the following day. She said the pain was so
bad she could barely turn her head.
During the examination, I noticed that her whole muscular system was
tight, almost to the point of rigidity. It was as if she were suffering
from a full-body spasm. From the examination, which includes an
assessment of the abdominal area, I could tell that she was suffering
severe gas pains. We talked for a while, and she told me about her
on-the-road diet, which was not very healthy and frequently featured
tasty treats like toaster pastries and ice cream. It became clear to me
that her primary problem -- so serious that it caused back and neck
tension and pain -- stemmed from bad eating.

Dr. Blau consulted with a registered
dietician to develop nearly 100 easy-to-prepare dishes that capitalize
on the anti-inflammatory properties of a wide range of tasty foods and
spices. Every meal in the plan has high omega-3 content, low
omega-6 content, and an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio below 5 which is key in
reducing the inflammation that is the root of arthritis. Each food
has a low glycemic index, low glycemic load, and is low in sodium and
cholesterol. A powerful weapon against arthritis pain, these
delicious dishes also yield such life-enhancing side effects as lower
cholesterol, reduced blood sugar, and weight loss.

The Good Food - Bad Food Technique for Healthy Eating
By Brad Pilon
The Two Types of Food
Nutrition is a hot topic that is discussed by just about every magazine
writer, talk show host, fitness expert and guru in the industry. It seems
like just about everyone can quote some scientific research, touting the
benefit of eating one certain type of diet or another, or ramble on about
the scientific reasons why some foods are better for you than others.
In my opinion, all of these scientific intellectual ramblings may actually
be part of the reason why people still have a hard time eat healthy.
Let's face it, when it comes to understanding what's good for us and what's
not, "science" is confusing the heck out of us!
Because the science of nutrition seems to involve flip-flopping your
opinions every other day, the best approach to eating healthy is to look at
nutrition with the most simplified technique possible.

Life Without Ed: How One Woman Declared Independence from Her Eating Disorder and How You Can Too
A Breakthrough Book By Jenni Schaefer
It's
not a pretty topic. It's not a comfortable topic. It's not a topic that makes
a book "easy" to read. Yet, walking with author Jenni Schaefer
through her eating
disorder on the road to healing, somehow helped me feel
absolutely liberated. Be warned - Life With (or Without) Ed is
not comfortable. That said, this is exactly why it's a book every person,
especially every parent, should read.
Jenni
gives us a powerful and candid account of what Life "With" Ed (Ed is an
acronym for her eating disorder) is like. You will want to know the signs.
You don't need to know "Ed" personally to
see the signs of someone struggling with an eating disorder. Yet, you will want
to know the ways he "talks" to you and those you love. Ed works by
tempting you to destroy yourself and your body through the quest for body-image
perfection. I'd be willing to bet Ed is closer than you think. Even as
close as your own friends, family, or in your own mind and body.
As Jenni
tells us, it is not a simple task to recognize someone with an eating disorder.
They come in all shapes and sizes and you'd be surprised where "Ed" lurks.
For me, I was amazed how this "voice" Jenni describes can tempt us simply
through body issues. But, it does. And I'm left to wonder if any of us are really free
or safe from the quest for perfection.

Redefining Recovery: Getting Beyond
The Behaviors Of An Eating Disorder
Jenni Schaefer
How would you define recovery in one word?”
Kelly asked.
“Free,” I answered.
Kelly is a young woman struggling with an eating disorder. She was
talking with me, because I am recovered from anorexia and bulimia. I
have been there.
“Free” means a lot more than simply freedom from destructive behaviors
with food. It means much more than just a life without bingeing,
purging, and starving. That kind of a life is really not free at all.
“Free” also means independence from the unrelenting obsessions related
to food and body image. It is a release from fear’s daily control. It
means freedom to live life to its fullest.
Recovery encompasses every facet of life. When someone truly recovers
from an eating disorder or any addiction, they get much more that just
“not bingeing,” “not drinking,” or “not using.”
When I first began therapy for my eating disorder, I thought that my
ultimate goal was to stop acting out with the negative behaviors
surrounding food. I believed that my life would be magically transformed
into something wonderful if I could just eat right. After years of hard
work in recovery --- and lots of stumbling --- I did finally begin to
“eat right.” I could not have been more wrong about eating right.

Youthful Aging - The Frontline Meal to
Slow Aging is a Healthy Breakfast
By Celia Westberry
If
you want to look, feel and be healthier, breakfast is the winning meal. It
breaks the night’s fast and renews your energy. Because, whether you are a
housewife, a busy executive or a teacher, your energy must come from food. A
well balanced breakfast keeps your metabolism balanced, as you slow your
aging and keeps you looking great.
A healthy breakfast jumpstarts your body. If you got in your car and the low
fuel light is flashing, without a thought you would stop and add gas. This
is what breakfast does for you - a frontline source to boost human energy.
A well balanced breakfast includes complex carbohydrate, protein and fat. So
grabbing a donut and a cup of black coffee is not enough. As soon as you get
used to your coffee high, your body is asking, so where’s the beef (think
protein)? Read More ==>
