Words Of Inspiration: Body Signs - A Review

Body Signs -
A Review
By Laura M. Turner

What if you could learn to take charge of your health simply by using the signs and signals your body gives you? Would you pay attention to them?  I am betting you would. The reality is, our bodies do talk to us - if only we would take the time to listen.

Authors Joan Liebmann-Smith, Ph.D., medical sociologist and award-winning medical writer, and Jacqueline Nardi Egan, medical journalist, agree that our bodies do speak to us it their own language.  Therefore, they have helped us to decode these signals in their new book: Body Signs: From Warning Signs To False Alarms... How To Be Your Own Diagnostic Detective.

More importantly, their book is not about approaching our bodies with a frightened sense of hypochondria. Instead, they teach us how to listen in for the signs and signals that our bodies give us, body part by body part.  All this in effort to help us make the adjustments we need to make, both to create a healthier body and (hopefully) avoid any trouble before it manifests itself.

<<If you haven't already, be sure to read an excerpt from their book Body Signs here>>

Here's an example of how I've used the book myself to help preserve the health of my family:

Recently my father was diagnosed with a unique eye affliction called "Horner's Syndrome." Authors mention this in the book as "a single droopy eyelid" that is part of a cluster of nerve-damage related signs.  For him, this included a constricted pupil on one side of the face only, and under-active sweating on the same afflicted side. As a result he needed to have the eyelid surgically shortened.  After the surgery, he seemed fine and had less symptoms; all nerve tests were negative.  But what was this signal trying to tell him?

According to authors, Horner's Syndrome could be present at birth (a possibility since "lazy eye" does run in his family) but this could be another clue indicating the early sign of diabetes.  And, yes, consequently after his doctor checked his blood work - he was borderline diabetic.  Therefore, he is now making the proper adjustments to his diet and learning how to make smarter choices in effort to avoid the affliction all together!

This is just an example of how you can become your family's own health detective.  When you take the time to read Body Signs, you will also get:

  • Common sense wisdom about each body part and the signs and signals it gives you (and you can use this information, just as I did in the scenario above)
  • Historical and significant fun facts about our body parts aimed to teach us more about the history of each body sign.  For example, did you know both your ears and your nose continue to grow throughout your entire life?
  • Warning signs to look for that could signal possible difficulties in the future
  • and more!

Body Signs is a treasure trove of wisdom, humor and scientific fact designed to help you keep your body healthy and disease-free.  I do hope you'll find, as I did, by using Body Signs you can move from taking a passive approach your health (and the health of your family), to becoming your own active health detective.
