Knowledge Is Power: A Review Of The Definitive Guide To Cancer
By Laura M. Turner
In the light of cancer awareness month I can think of
no better medium for taking back the power of your body than the new book:
Alternative Medicine Magazine's Definitive Guide To Cancer. If knowledge
is power than authors
Lise Alschuler, ND and Karolyn Gazella
are well endowed. And their energy is contagious. Their book takes readers on a human journey,
one that travels
through the art and science of dealing with this life threatening illness.
Through this approach, in this
reader's opinion, they are successful
in making the disease seem less of a death sentence and more of an
uncovering of awareness. Further, we are privy
to their own stories: Alschuler's contribution to healing her own dad, and
Gazella's own heart-wrenching biographies including her mom, sister, as well
as her self. Therefore, to give a proper review to the
Definitive Guide To Cancer would take far more space than we have
here.
For our purposes, however, I can only hope to give the book the respect it
deserves. I'll aim to accomplish this by giving you the main points
as I see them - doing my best to stay true to what I feel are the authors'
intention. First: In the ways of disease prevention, the book gives us a
shocking reality:
genetics are only a part of the equation. And a very small part at that.
I'm sure I'm not giving away trade secrets from the research store when I tell you that the risks
of cancer as
Alschuler and Gazella define them come forth out of three other
main areas:
lifestyle choices, nutrition (or lack thereof) and environmental toxins. Therefore
here's what you should know: our first line of defense against cancer is prevention.
Although prevention does not offer a guarantee that healthy people
won't get cancer, the Guide allows us to distill this information further: There are
ways we can help ourselves become less at risk. And they are
not hard to come by. One is glaringly obvious: control obesity.
It's no big secret that obesity is at an all time high in the United States. Childhood obesity is a much more severe thought. Yet
here's what we know
about toxins: they love to camp out in our body fat.
It makes sense to keep weight in check to decrease
chances of cancer and other chronic illnesses. Exercise seems the ideal way
to do this. Exercising regularly will keep the body's circulation moving,
as well as keep metabolism in
full swing. All this in effort to evict those toxic predators.
Too, the Guide gives us sound nutritional
advice (you can read the excerpt
The Power Of Food here) as well as takes a look at
our personal
products and the ways toxins can unknowingly creep into our bodies.
The second line of defense against cancer is early detection.
In the book
Alschuler and Gazella outline an annual screening road-map for everyone. According to authors, early detection makes cancer
easier to treat and easier to remove. In
the second part of the Guide, you'll learn both the latest in
conventional cancer treatment
therapies, as well as many of the
most modern in alternative practices found to work in tandem. This book
is unique. Here you will learn about modalities like acupuncture, herbal medicine and
homeopathics, as well as a host of other alternatives that have shown
promise in improving the outcome of cancer treatment. A rare find in a
book based on scientific evidence.
More reasons to love the Guide:
-
It takes an integrative approach. I love that the book gives the reader a look
at both conventional and alternative methods for cancer treatment. It
also includes wonderful case
studies that show promise in the integrative approach to healing.
-
The Guide is user friendly and
helps all tailor their own wellness approach.
-
The Guide unabashedly gives us supplements that show promise.
As I've mentioned, a rare find in a scientific based book.
-
It gives us real, human stories.
The stories in the book are truly heartwarming. Here we have a
first hand account of how dangerous this disease can be, as well as its ability to change lives.
At the same time, we receive the information that allows us to take back
the power of our own bodies.
In Conclusion:
The most powerful take home message of the Definitive Guide To Cancer?
In my humble opinion, it is this: we have
more options than ever before, both for prevention, early
intervention and treatment. This so we can learn to make more informed choices
in our day-to-day lives.
If you, like me, feel afraid simply hearing the word cancer - this book is a must read
for you.
The Guide and its authors will give you the knowledge to move the
power from the "disease" and transfer it back to creating a sound and
healthy mind and body - a "whole" you.
