Surviving The “Junk Food” World
By Dov Oshri
I’m now in the Hong Kong airport waiting for my
flight back to Singapore. I have been in Hong Kong for the last 2 weeks. If you
haven’t visited this vibrant city, I recommend that you do it in the future.
Most of us have the perception that Asians, especially Chinese, are slim. Forget
it. South East Asia has 2/3 of the world’s obesity according to the recent
review by the World Health Organization.
In the last few weeks I’ve seen more fast food chain restaurants than
traditional Chinese eateries. Rushing to the airport from a meeting, I missed my
mid-morning meal, which is a protein shake and an apple. I find myself hungry
surrounded by nothing but fast food airport “junk-food” eateries.
My first rule of a healthy enjoyable lifestyle is “never be hungry”. When you
are hungry your body switches from “fat burning mode” to “fat storing mode” even
if you frequently exercise. That’s the main reason restricted calories diets
don’t work with or without exercise. So with a short time left before my
departure, my first and fastest choice was “Burger King”.
Well, as you might guess, fast food chains are not my favorite choice. But when
you travel and have limited options, some of them are better than the others. I
prefer Burger King to McDonalds because they have a great lean grilled chicken
breast fillet called Chicken Woofer, while McDonalds serves a chicken cutlet
which God knows what it contains.
Chicken Woofer is served in a huge bun greased with mayonnaise. But with some
small changes this junk food transforms to a delicious healthy meal.
First, I asked if they serve salad and the nice lady at the counter replied that
they only have sandwiches. Then, I asked for a double Chicken Woofer which
doesn’t appear on the menu and she ran to her shift manager to ask what to do. I
guess I am the first client ever that have asked for a double Chicken Woofer. I
also asked to replace the mayonnaise with mustard and then came the most
confusing part: I asked for a fork and a knife. She gave me this weird look as
if to ask why should I need cutlery to eat a big sandwich.
Sitting at the table, came the fun part. I removed the upper bun and started
using the fork and the knife to eat the salad and the 2 chicken breasts the same
way I usually eat from my plate. I finished my meal leaving behind the 2 empty
buns and headed to the gate.
But then I realized that I was still hungry! I returned to the counter for a
second round. The women almost fainted when she saw me again ordering the same
food to take away.
I was set up for the next 2-3 hours. Next challenge: the airline food…
So this is the way I survive the junk food world When I don’t have other
choices, I manipulate it to my life style. I’ve done this over the last 2 weeks
many times but my best experience is Subway. The first thing you notice when you
enter any Subway store is the wonderful smell of the bread. They could have put
it in the back kitchen, but they don’t. They want you to smell it and they add
aromatic flavors to enhance your experience. They want the smell to entice you
order the 12” sandwich rather than the 6” sandwich. Don’t be tempted by the
whole wheat option. It still contains sugar and it is low in fiber. My first
choice is the “double” chicken salad topped up with avocado and cheese. You get
plenty of protein, high fiber and excellent avocado fat. It’s another great way
to survive the junk food world.
Now, do I ever eat bread? Yes I do, but it’s usually on Sunday which is my
cheating day. My simple rule is it’s better to keep on the straight and narrow
90% of the time rather than to go for the 100% and fail.
