Language Of The Soul
- A Review
By Laura M. Turner

Are you telling your truth?  Whether you are or you're not, your soul knows the answer.  And if the story you are telling the world is not your authentic one, this could not only affect your health and your relationships, but the future of this and all generations to come.  How do we know if we are telling our truth? By listening to the language of our soul.  It is here we must answer the hard questions.  The deep questions. The questions that answer what created the pain we may be experiencing in the first place.  And this pain can run the gamut, from destructive behaviors, deep feelings and addiction to career challenges, relationships and depression.

In his book Language of The Soul, author, metaphysical teacher and personal coach John L. Payne helps readers with this soul work.  In the book, he uses the help of "human characters" to bring forward the truth.  Once the truth is  out in the open and the source is discovered, the wounds can be healed. The Language Of the Soul does its work by using what Payne calls a family "constellation." In my assessment a constellation is a chosen team representing core family or human members active in the roles that stand between us and our truth.  Once chosen, Payne creates a sort of "reading": a tuning in to the channel of the soul to learn both what it wants and how to best express its truth.

On the outside, this all seems confusing at first. Yet, after reading the Language of the Soul, I found its immediate take home message: we must all take a personal responsibility to heal the wounds that plague our selves and our families.  Payne's book can help. For in healing our own souls, we can help our past, present and future generations. The best way to explain the depth of this work is to give you a personal example based on what I think are the three main tools for healing found in Payne's book.

Tool #1 - The Use Of Constellations: At first, the notion of creating a family "constellation" seemed foreign to me.  Yet, the more I read through the case studies in the Language Of The Soul, it occurred to me that I've often felt "blocked" with regard to building a career borne out of my creativity.  Could it be my "truth" emerging?  I read on.

Soon, I became acutely aware, the "blockage" arose out of my "approval seeking." More specifically, from my father.  In my mind, approval from him would somehow give me "permission" to explore my creative talents in full, opposed to keeping them as a quiet and desperate hobby.  Each time I would place a proverbial toe in the water, however (sharing dreams of book writing and academics), they were met with apprehension or ignored all together. Moreover, labor intensive pursuits gained accolades. I was confused.

Too, after reading further through Payne's case scenarios, I agreed with those who defined their parent as seeming "big." And as a result, there was always an unspoken fear of disapproval. In addition, any effort toward creating a "normal" relationship became conditional, invoked inferiority, as well as caused people to hide the unapproved parts of the self. I was guilty on all counts.

Payne had the answer. And after creating my own family constellation on paper, it revealed that my father carried the same "approval seeking" burden from his own father.  His father worked long factory hours, a remedy for his roots in the "old country." And there it was.  What's worse? The men of this ancestry were never allowed to "talk" about their feelings. According to Payne, this scenario is as common as the O+ blood type.

Tool #2 - Drawing Energy From The Field: In my assessment, "the field" as Payne defines it, is the source of all energy and ancestry. Therefore, when setting up a family constellation, the "characters," he explains, often find their energy "takes on" the personality of whom they represent. In creating my own constellation, for example, I would choose representatives for the men in my family lineage dating back to my grandfather.

It is "the field," therefore, that allows us to dialogue with these family members, even if they are no longer with us. And by creating a simple and gentle dialogue (what Payne describes as a "distilled truth") I can, for example, help the generations of men in my family to bond and heal through facsimile.  Thus, by working in the field, it affects my energy and can create healing change.

As it happened, I did come to a healing resolve by using the dialogue offered through Payne's case studies.  Reading about other scenarios like mine, I concluded: I love my father simply because he is my father.  Naturally, I would want his approval for my career as well as all of my choices in life.  Moreover, the "burden" that he carries from his ancestry, is no no longer my burden. Doing this work has allowed me to release it. And in doing so, the field between us becomes level; my father is now a person just like me with hopes, dreams and feelings.

Tool #3: - On Forgiveness:  In the end, it is the "constellation" that helps heal. Most often we are asked to forgive others who have hurt us or have empathy for the burdens they carry. In doing so, we can thereby leave behind our feelings of separation and trust that the work we can do "in the field" will allow us to speak our own truth. This can, according to Payne, transform our soul and transform our life, for real.

In conclusion, Payne gives a host of his own studies, scenarios covering many of life's afflictions.  In the same way he helped me understand my family dynamics, he also helps us understand how drug addiction happens, as well as why nations and cultures are still hurting. This is an absolute awakening.  Could it be by healing in our own satellite families, we can heal our piece of the larger family?  Perhaps the greatest truth, as Payne tells us, is our own and where all healing can begin.  Yes, at first glance, the workings of Language Of The Soul seem complicated if not impossible, yet after further comprehension, I realize, Payne may have unlocked the kingdom for all of us.
